Is My Ford at Risk?

Many Ford Focus, Fiesta, Transit Connect and Transit Custom (2012+) petrol and diesel engines are notorious for wet belt failures that can quietly destroy your engine if not caught early. If you own one of these models, your car is at risk:

Warning Signs Your Ford Wet Belt Is Failing

If left unchecked, the belt can snap or the engine can seize completely. A full engine replacement will typically set you back £2,000–£4,000+. Replacing the wet belt before it fails saves you money, hassle, and gets you back on the road safely.

What Is a Ford Wet Timing Belt?

A wet timing belt runs inside your engine sitting directly in the engine oil, instead of running outside behind plastic covers like a traditional timing belt. Ford introduced this design in their EcoBoost (petrol) and EcoBlue (diesel) engines to reduce friction, noise and emissions. In theory it sounds good. In practice it has caused thousands of problems.

Here is what happens over time: the rubber belt material breaks down in hot engine oil, shedding tiny particles that mix into the oil and form thick sludge. That sludge blocks the oil pick-up strainer at the bottom of the engine. Once blocked, the engine is starved of oil — triggering warning lights, and if you keep driving, complete engine failure.

When Should You Change the Ford Wet Belt?

Ford originally claimed these belts could last up to 150,000 miles or 10 years. Real-world UK experience tells a very different story. Many wet belts start causing problems between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or around 5 to 8 years, depending on how the car has been serviced and what oil has been used.

If your Fiesta, Focus or Transit is over that age or mileage, or if you are seeing any of the warning signs listed above, it is time to have the belt and oil system checked rather than waiting for it to fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Ford have a wet timing belt?

If you own a Ford Focus, Fiesta, Transit Connect or Transit Custom (2012–2022) with an EcoBoost (petrol) or EcoBlue (diesel) engine, yes — it has a wet timing belt. Not sure? Call us with your registration number and we will confirm it for you.

When should I replace the Ford wet timing belt?

Ford claims up to 150,000 miles or 10 years, but real-world UK experience shows problems often start between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, or 5 to 8 years. If your car is approaching this range or showing warning signs, have it inspected immediately.

Is it safe to drive if my Ford oil light is on?

No. If your oil light is flickering or staying on, do not keep driving. Low oil pressure means your engine is not getting the lubrication it needs and continuing to drive can cause permanent, expensive damage. Get it recovered to us or call for advice.

How long does a Ford wet belt replacement take?

A proper wet belt replacement — done correctly with sump removal, oil pick-up cleaning and full system flush — typically takes a full day. We do not rush the job because cutting corners causes problems down the line.

What happens if I ignore a failing wet belt?

The oil pick-up gets blocked with belt debris and sludge, oil pressure drops to nothing, and the engine either seizes or suffers catastrophic internal damage. At that point you are looking at a replacement engine — typically £2,000 to £4,000 or more, plus fitting.

Can I prevent Ford wet belt problems?

Regular oil changes with the correct Ford-spec oil are essential. Fresh, high-quality oil slows down the belt degradation process. If your car is approaching the risk zone (60k–100k miles or 5–8 years), book an inspection with us.

Are you Ford specialists?

Yes. We work on Ford EcoBoost and EcoBlue wet belt engines regularly using Ford-specific tools and following best practice. We provide dealer-level diagnosis and replacement at independent garage prices.

Will servicing at Junior's affect my Ford warranty?

No. We follow the official Ford service schedule and use high-quality OEM-equivalent parts, ensuring your manufacturer warranty remains fully intact.
